How to Add or subtract two Matrices?
Two matrices can be added or subtracted only if they have same order. Otherwise, they are not eligible for addition. For example, we have two matrices
and
, they are eligible to be added or subtracted because they have same order (2 x 3).
If, we have
and
then they are not eligible to be added or subtracted because they have different order. Order of A is 2 x 2 and order of B is 2 x3.
Now, the real question is that how the matrices can be added or subtracted if they are eligible to be added or subtracted (if they have same order).
To add two matrices, we just need to add corresponding elements of both the matrices. Suppose,
and
Then,
In the similar way, matrices can be subtracted. We just subtract elements of one matrix from corresponding elements of other matrix. For example, to calculate A-B, we subtract elements of matrix B from corresponding elements of matrix A.
Suppose, we have
and
Then,
Note that
which means that matrix addition is commutative but
unless A and B are equal.
