Using divisibility tests, determine which of the following numbers are divisible by 4; by 8:
(a) 572 (b) 726352 (c) 5500 (d) 6000 (e) 12159 (f) 14560 (g) 21084
(h) 31795072 (i) 1700 (j) 2150
Solution (a)
572 is divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (72) is divisible by 4.
Any given number is divisible by 8 if the number formed by its last three digits is divisible by 8.
Number formed by the last three digits of 572 is 572 itself and it is not divisible by 8.
Solution (b)
726352 is divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (52) is divisible by 4.
Any given number is divisible by 8 if the number formed by its last three digits is divisible by 8.
Number formed by the last three digits of 726352 is 352 and 352 it is divisible by 8. It means that 726352 is divisible by 8.
Solution (c)
5500 is divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (00) is divisible by 4.
5500 is not divisible by 8 because the number formed by the last three digits (500) is not divisible by 8.
Solution (d)
6000 is divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (00) is divisible by 4.
6000 is divisible by 8 because the number formed by the last three digits (000) is divisible by 8.
Solution (e)
12159 is not divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (59) is not divisible by 4.
12159 is not divisible by 8 because the number formed by the last three digits (159) is not divisible by 8.
Solution (f)
14560 is divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (60) is divisible by 4.
14560 is divisible by 8 because the number formed by the last three digits (560) is divisible by 8.
Solution (g)
21084 is divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (84) is divisible by 4.
21084 is not divisible by 8 because the number formed by the last three digits (084) is not divisible by 8.
Solution (h)
31795072 is divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (72) is divisible by 4.
31795072 is divisible by 8 because the number formed by the last three digits (072) is divisible by 8.
Solution (i)
1700 is divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (00) is divisible by 4.
1700 is not divisible by 8 because the number formed by the last three digits (700) is not divisible by 8.
Solution (j)
2150 is not divisible by 4 because the number formed by the last two digits (50) is not divisible by 4.
2150 is not divisible by 8 because the number formed by the last three digits (150) is not divisible by 8.
